The burnout epidemic

In the financial services sector, burnout has emerged as a critical issue, threatening employee well-being and organizational efficiency. Recent data highlights that an alarming 77% of employees have experienced burnout, with profound consequences including diminished productivity, increased job turnover, and severe mental health issues.

The rise of remote and hybrid work has compounded these challenges. A 2022 study revealed that 31% of professionals in banking and finance are considering exiting the industry due to the relentless stress, underscoring the urgent need for interventions to address this pervasive problem.

Designing a solution

At Thrive Global, I managed the design and development of a web platform to integrate health and well-being resources into the workflows of over 200,000 employees at the largest bank in the United States. We focused on three core themes:

Project leadership

I oversaw four internal teams, utilizing a structured approach with 10-day sprints and regular scrum meetings to keep the project on track. Following each deliverable, I conducted a detailed retrospective to analyze our successes and pinpoint opportunities for improvement, promoting continuous team development and collaboration.

Shipping the platform

We launched the websites internally on J.P. Morgan’s intranet portal over the course of three business quarters.
To ensure a seamless roll-out, I worked with stakeholders from both our company and the client to develop a thorough launch communications plan. This involved email campaigns, social media announcements, and live sessions with well-being experts to educate and engage the community.
With each subsequent launch, we learned what went well and what didn’t. By the third launch, we saw a record number of users visiting our site and interacting with our content.

Demonstrating success

In the months following the platform’s launch at J.P. Morgan, we measured success through the following metrics:

+20k

Total unique visitors

Total site visitors exceeded our client's expectations

+400%

Views than previous solutions

Engagement with our websites vastly outperformed existing well-being offerings

+1,000

Blog posts from employees

Widespread community contributions highlighted the success of our solution
